Bangladesh Opener Shadman Islam Hospitalized After Ankle Injury

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam has been moved to a local hospital for an MRI scan and medical assessment after injuring his left ankle during the second day of the second Test against the West Indies in Sylhet. Shadman Islam has been taken to hospital for an MRI scan and further assessment after twisting his ankle while fielding on Day 2 of the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet.

The incident occurred during the 78th over of the first innings as he pursued a ball played toward fine leg by Amir Jangoo. Shadman appeared in significant pain after slipping while attempting to field the ball and was ultimately stretchered off the ground.

BCB physio Bayzediul Islam confirmed the development in a formal statement, noting the player is currently under medical observation. A member of the Bangladesh team management indicated that it is unlikely the opening batter will participate further in the ongoing Test match. A source noted that while the team is hoping for a positive outcome, there is little confidence regarding his immediate availability for the remainder of the fixture. Let’s hope for the best but we are not very confident about his availability,” he said.

Because the injury is unrelated to a head impact, Bangladesh will not be permitted to field a concussion substitute should the opener be officially ruled out. Consequently, the team would be forced to proceed with only ten players for the duration of the match. The West Indies currently hold a 1-0 lead in this two-match Test series. They would therefore have to continue with only 10 players for the rest of the match.
