UAE Golf, Premier League and F1 Lead Packed Weekend Sports Lineup

Sports enthusiasts face a packed schedule of high-stakes competition both locally across the UAE and around the globe this weekend. Major highlights include elite golf in Abu Dhabi, crucial Premier League fixtures, the Formula 1 São Paulo Grand Prix, the women’s tennis season finale, and community fitness initiatives in Dubai. There’s plenty of sport happening right here in the UAE this weekend as well as globally.

Abu Dhabi Championship at Yas Links

The DP World Tour Play-Offs kick off at Yas Links with the Abu Dhabi Championship, where Italy’s Francesco Laporta captured the early lead on Thursday. Laporta delivered a flawless, bogey-free opening round of 10-under-par 62, creating a three-stroke margin at the top. Trailing in tied second at seven-under are Jon Rahm, Sam Bairstow, and Bernd Wiesberger, with Matthew Jordan and Adrian Meronk a shot further back at six-under. Defending titleholder Aaron Rai posted a solid opening five-under 67.

Rory McIlroy generated the biggest storyline of the opening day after receiving a two-shot penalty for improving the lie of his ball on the 12th hole. The Northern Irishman carded a two-under 70, leaving him eight strokes off the lead as he pursues a record-matching eighth Race to Dubai crown. Competitor Eugenio Chacarra also shot a 70, while Patrick Reed logged a two-over 74.

Premier League: Spotlight on Old Trafford

English top-flight football resumes with a full slate of matches, headlined by Manchester United hosting Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday. Manager Michael Carrick faces growing pressure with United positioned 17th in the standings, having claimed just one victory in nine league matches. Despite securing a dramatic midweek Champions League win over Roma, United remain winless in the league since August as they prepare to face Unai Emery’s Villa squad.

Weekend action opens Friday night with Everton taking on Coventry City. Saturday features Leeds United against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal facing Hull City, Fulham playing Newcastle United, and Manchester City traveling to Nottingham Forest. Sunday’s match card includes Liverpool visiting Crystal Palace, Chelsea away at Sunderland, Brighton hosting Brentford, and Ipswich facing Bournemouth, preceding the weekend finale at Old Trafford.

Formula 1: São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos

Formula 1 arrives in South America for the Brazil GP, following 20-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli securing his maiden world championship at the Mexican Grand Prix. Antonelli became the youngest world champion in F1 history after finishing third in Mexico, locking up the drivers’ title with four races remaining. Mercedes now aims to seal the Constructors’ Championship, while Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and George Russell compete for second place overall.

The race weekend features Lewis Hamilton marking his 400th Grand Prix start, alongside Brazilian rookie Rafael Câmara making his home F1 debut. Rain threatens to impact the iconic Interlagos circuit. Saturday’s qualifying is scheduled for 10pm UAE time, ahead of Sunday’s 71-lap main race at 9pm UAE time.

WTA Finals Debut in California

The elite women’s tennis season concludes as the WTA Finals open at Indian Wells in California on Sunday, November 8. Featuring a $10 million prize pool alongside critical ranking points, the tournament gathers eight top players divided into two four-player groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals before crowning the champion on November 15. Fans can expect a thrilling conclusion to the women’s tennis calendar, with a $10 million prize fund and valuable ranking points up for grabs.

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina enters as defending champion following her title in Riyadh last year. Rybakina opens her campaign against Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, while the field also includes Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Mirra Andreeva. An all-American matchup between Gauff and Pegula highlights the opening day’s schedule.
