Taskin Ahmed Labels Batting Collapse a Reality Check

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed described his side’s performance against Zimbabwe as a significant reality check following a 99-run defeat in the opening match of their tri-nation ODI series on Saturday, October 17. Chasing a target of 272 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh collapsed to 172 all out in just 33.4 overs on a track considered favorable for batting. The collapse undid the work of a promising start with the ball.

Taskin, who claimed three wickets in the match, insisted that the target was well within reach despite the absence of Litton Das, who was ruled out of the tournament due to a right hip joint injury. “270 was definitely chaseable, at least against Zimbabwe,” Taskin stated after the game. He pointed to the team’s inability to form meaningful partnerships as the primary reason for the downfall, noting that a single sustained stand could have shifted the momentum in their favor. “We actually didn’t play well, meaning we should have chased it, and unfortunately, we couldn’t form a single partnership. But still, there’s one game left, and we hope to fight back well so we can play the final,” he said.

This performance highlights a recurring struggle for the team, as Bangladesh has now failed to successfully chase a target of 240 or more in eight of their last 10 innings while batting second. The loss also marked the first match for Towhid Hridoy as the side’s full-time ODI captain. Taskin emphasized that the batting unit must address their consistency and lack of game awareness under pressure, acknowledging that individual performances are meaningless without collective team success. “The problem is with consistency and it has been observed that we need to build this consistency and game awareness. Our lack of game awareness is a bit more because everyone has the skill, and all of you who watch cricket know that every batsman has proven that they can bat well.

Addressing questions regarding the team’s wider record, including a lack of away series wins since the 2023 victory against Ireland in Chelmsford, Taskin reiterated that the team must improve across all departments. “This has been a reality check, showing us which areas we need to improve—batting, bowling, team-wise,” he said. He added that the responsibility to perform lies equally with both the batsmen and the bowlers. Bangladesh have not won a bilateral series away from home since beating Ireland in Chelmsford in 2023.

Looking ahead, the pacer expressed optimism that the team would resolve these issues before their next encounter. He stated that the squad is working hard to correct their mistakes and remains focused on securing a place in the tournament final. Bangladesh will have the opportunity to bounce back when they take on Afghanistan in their second group match on October 21. I’m sure we are all working together on how to fix this quickly,” he said. According to i’m sure, Inshallah, these will be fixed very soon,”, The pace bowler.

Taskin concluded that the current challenges must be fixed quickly to ensure the team can compete effectively at an international level. He remains confident that the group will make a strong comeback, stating that consistency is the key factor the team must master to overcome their current hurdles. We somehow have to overcome this, if we want to be a big team.
