Barclays to Cut 5,000 Jobs as AI Integration Accelerates

Barclays has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 5,000 employees, representing roughly 5% of its global staff, as it integrates artificial intelligence into its core business processes. The lender confirmed that 1,000 roles have already been eliminated, with the remaining 4,000 positions expected to be phased out by the end of the year. These reductions are primarily concentrated in support functions, including developer roles, and impact both the UK retail bank and the investment banking division. According to barclays, Around 60% of the job cuts will fall within its support functions, including among developers.

While the cost-cutting measures target the UK retail sector, the bank noted that a significant portion of its back-office work is handled in India, where many of the affected roles are based. This initiative marks the conclusion of a three-year cost-reduction programme aimed at simplifying the bank’s operations. Barclays anticipates that these efficiency efforts will yield an additional £1.1bn in savings by 2027.

Barclays Group chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan attributed the layoffs to heavy investment in technology designed to refine business operations. Addressing the role of new software, Venkatakrishnan stated that while the company plans to deploy AI at scale, it serves as the “icing on the cake” rather than the primary foundation. He emphasized that building robust infrastructure remains the essential prerequisite for capturing the benefits of such technology. Because you need to do the infrastructure build to get the benefits of AI.

Despite the restructuring, the bank reported a profit of £2.3bn for the third quarter ending in September, marking an increase from the same period the previous year, though the figure fell slightly short of market forecasts. Higher than the same period a year ago, but slightly less than forecast, barclays also revealed it made £2.3bn profit in the three months to September.

Financial analysts have observed that the results reflect a broader trend in the sector. Will Howlett of Quilter Cheviot noted that the job cuts demonstrate “how significantly AI and automation could reshape the banking industry over the next few years,” as long-term technology spending begins to reduce the human resources required to maintain business operations.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, suggested that Barclays is actively “reaching for the AI lever” to manage its workforce as it incorporates advanced automation. However, he noted that the company’s recent financial performance has not fully met investor expectations. As the industry evolves, experts are closely tracking how effectively these technological investments translate into sustained operational efficiency and reduced employment requirements across the banking sector.

Reflecting on the future of the firm’s strategy, leadership maintained that artificial intelligence has an important role to play in the company’s long-term trajectory. Barclays continues to focus on infrastructure development to ensure that its modernization plan successfully simplifies its complex business model while maintaining profitability in a shifting financial landscape.
