Jahanara Alam Seeks Return to Bangladesh Cricket Team

Former Bangladesh women’s team captain Jahanara Alam is looking to end her hiatus from the sport, with plans to return to professional cricket before she formally retires. Jahanara, who has been away from competitive cricket since her last appearance against Ireland in December 2024, initially stepped aside citing mental fatigue and subsequently relocated to Australia.

Rafiqul Islam Babu, chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) women’s wing, confirmed on Thursday, October 15, that the board has received word of her intentions. He noted that Jahanara reached out to express her desire to play at both the domestic and international levels. According to Rafiqul, she stated that her primary motivation is to finish her career by actively representing the national team, a goal she has maintained by staying physically prepared during her time away. According to “She, ‘I want to retire by playing in the national team and that is the reason I have kept myself that fit’,” he added. Since then, she has not been involved in Bangladesh women’s cricket at any level, neither being part of the national set-up nor participating in domestic competitions.

The board is currently reviewing the situation and is expected to reach a decision soon. During the discussion, Rafiqul addressed the need for professional conduct, noting that personal rivalries and internal grouping within the team are detrimental to national interests and remain unacceptable. He emphasized that the board plans to address the broader team environment as part of their deliberations. But these are absolutely unacceptable in the interest of the country,” Rafiqul said, many people may have personal rivalries with many people.

Jahanara’s tenure away from the squad was marked by significant controversy after she leveled allegations of sexual harassment against members of the BCB’s women’s department. Furthermore, she claimed that captain Nigar Sultana had physically assaulted her, allegations that prompted intense scrutiny regarding the team’s internal dynamics. Nigar later spoke publicly on these claims and her approach to captaincy, setting the stage for the upcoming discussions on the player’s potential reinstatement.
