The relatives of a young man who died after entering a tiger enclosure at a wildlife park have remembered him as a bright, warm, and engaging individual.

William Chapman, 23, visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday and sustained fatal injuries after going into the animal’s pen, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family disclosed in a statement that he had experienced significant mental health challenges over several years and had been prescribed strong medication, noting that determining whether this contributed to his death is a matter for the coroner. According to it, It was for the coroner to decide whether his mental illness played a part in his death, asking that the public respect that process.

The family are hopeful that the relevant authorities will do their upmost to get to the bottom of why our amazing son did what he did. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with William’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement continued.

Witnesses reported seeing Chapman wearing headphones and pacing near the enclosure beforehand, and mobile footage appears to show him approaching the tiger across grass inside the pen.

Chapman trained as a performer at the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, where staff remembered him fondly as a developing talent whose journey was a privilege to support.

As a child, he appeared in the television production May Contain Nuts alongside actors Shirley Henderson and Darren Boyd, and portrayed Edward Jenner in series True Stories.

Park officials confirmed that the rare Amur tiger, named Altai, remained inside the enclosure and would not be euthanised, while expressing sympathy alongside local authority leaders for those affected by the tragedy.
