US Conservative Media Uses French Unrest to Warn Voters

Donald Trump has attempted to leverage recent civil unrest in France to influence the American electorate, telling supporters at a Kansas rally on Monday that “migrants” and “communists” are to blame for the instability. He characterized the events as a direct preview of what the “radical ‘Dumocrats’” intend to inflict upon the United States. We want everyone to come to this country and chase their American dream.
As the midterm elections approach in November, conservative media outlets have amplified this narrative, evidently hoping that images of overseas turmoil will drive voters toward Republican candidates. Sean Hannity, a leading Fox News host, presented footage of fires in France on Tuesday alongside a graphic reading “A warning from Europe.” Hannity argued that the situation is a deliberate design by the left to dismantle Western civilization, calling it a “preview of coming attractions” for America. As Republicans struggle to convince voters across the country ahead of November’s midterm elections, Trump’s allies in the conservative media have followed suit, seemingly hoping that the scenes in France can scare people to the polls. Sean Hannity, perhaps Fox News’ most prominent host, delivered his version of the message on Tuesday. With the chyron “A warning from Europe” emblazoned on the screen, Hannity said: “This is, sadly I argue, by design – an attempt by the left to destroy the free world, western civilisation, if you will.”, speaking over clips of fires in France. According to he was only echoing something Ingraham herself had, A few days earlier, in front of a cartoon version of a police flashing light with the words “A warning to America”. “Look, we’ve got the same example in this country that we better be watching what’s going on in France.
The network’s coverage has been persistent, with Laura Ingraham also drawing parallels between French social unrest and American domestic policy.
During a segment with Jamie Metzl, a geopolitical expert, Ingraham featured a graphic warning viewers not to let the United States become France.
Metzl cautioned that those supporting democratic socialist candidates in the U.S. were essentially inviting the same outcomes seen abroad. Ingraham had previously linked policies like free college, government-funded healthcare, and open borders to the unrest, claiming these agendas are being promoted by progressive politicians such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. To the fiscal mismanagement, the same promises: free college, government-funded healthcare, tax the rich, climate change, open borders – they’re all being sold here, and they were implemented, some of them, here by AOC, Bernie, El-Sayed,” she said, from the immigration disaster there.
Other Fox News contributors echoed these sentiments throughout the week. Jesse Watters warned that the political objective is to displace capitalism, while Lawrence Jones emphasized a social media post from Vice-President JD Vance, who suggested that the chaos in France represents the future envisioned by congressional Democrats. Joining Jones, Daily Wire editor Ben Domenech added that the unrest in Europe stems from a reluctance to defend national values. The scenes in France, Domenech warned, are “the consequences of becoming apologetic about their values, viewing nationalism as something which is a dirty word”.
Newsmax joined in the messaging, with host Bianca de la Garza asking former senator Rick Santorum if the French crisis serves as a “wake-up call” for the American public. Santorum claimed that Democratic leftists aim to import European government models, which he alleged would inevitably lead to violent protests stateside. Furthermore, Santorum asserted that the average standard of living in Europe is significantly lower than in the United States, a claim that contradicts standard economic research.
Minnesota congressman Tom Emmer, speaking with Greta Van Susteren, suggested that the unrest stems from a failure to assimilate immigrants. He argued that the U.S. celebrates culture uniquely and cautioned that failing to integrate newcomers creates “a different country within your country,” citing France as a cautionary tale of this outcome.
One America News (OAN) also focused on the protests, bringing on cultural expert Andrew Fox to suggest that Paris offers a glimpse of the American future unless the nation toughens its immigration and integration policies. Additionally, OAN host David Pollack utilized social media and broadcast segments to connect the French protests to similar reported instability in Italy, labeling the developments as a result of immigration policies and declaring that “Marxists” are targeting the United States next. Fox, who has 433 followers on X, said: “If we pay attention to what’s happening in Paris we can see our near future, if we don’t really toughen up immigration policy and the integration of how those immigrants become one. Adding: “Now it’s happening in Italy: import the third world, and this is what you get, he tweeted a video of protesters in Italy.
