Tony de Zorzi Returns to South Africa’s Test Squad

South Africa has announced a trimmed 15-man squad for their upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, marking the return of batter Tony de Zorzi and fast bowler Anrich Nortje. De Zorzi missed the recent Test series against Australia due to a hamstring injury, while Nortje has been cleared to play after a groin issue restricted him to just one match during the Australian tour.

The Proteas selectors reduced their roster from the 18 players chosen for the Australia series, omitting five members of that winning squad. Senuran Muthusamy, David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, and Gerald Coetzee have all been dropped. Meanwhile, fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was not considered for selection as he continues his injury rehabilitation.

To bolster the top order following the exclusion of three batters, South Africa recalled 31-year-old Zubayr Hamza. Hamza, who has represented his country in eight Tests, last played international red-ball cricket in February 2024 against New Zealand. The squad will gather in Johannesburg on November 11 ahead of the series opener at the Wanderers on November 15, followed by the second and final Test starting November 23 in Centurion. The squad will assemble in Johannesburg on November 11 with the series set to kick off four days later at the same venue.

Head coach Shukri Conrad highlighted the tactical direction for the upcoming matches, noting, “Traditionally, surfaces on the Highveld favours pace and bounce, although we have seen the Wanderers offer some assistance to spin in recent times.” Conrad added that seam options will be a primary focus, noting that Bangladesh’s quick bowlers could also prove effective in Highveld conditions. He expressed confidence in de Zorzi’s recovery and stated that Hamza’s inclusion brings added depth to the top order. There will be greater focus on our seam-bowling options, so with that in mind. We know the threat Bangladesh pose and we expect their quicks to be very effective in Highveld conditions.
