Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been sidelined for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies after medical assessments in Australia confirmed he is suffering from a labrum tear. The injury, which was discovered following travel for a second opinion on persistent discomfort, also jeopardizes his participation in the subsequent tour of South Africa. The Asian Games and the one-off Test against Afghanistan, the injury had forced him to miss the tour of Australia.

A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official verified the diagnosis, noting that the pacer has already received an injection in Australia and has commenced a rehabilitation protocol. “Yes, a labrum tear has been detected,” the official stated, adding that the team expects him to resume bowling by October 30. Despite this progress, there is uncertainty regarding his availability for the first Test in South Africa. The official noted that his participation in the second Test of that series remains contingent upon his recovery speed. He is likely to bowl on Friday (October 30). It was believed that the pacer was suffering from weakness in the back and pelvic area, but the BCB decided to send him overseas for a second opinion, prior to that.

If his rehabilitation does not progress in time for the second Test against South Africa, the board anticipates his return to competitive cricket during the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour. The upcoming international schedule sees Bangladesh hosting the West Indies for two Tests beginning October 28, followed by a trip to South Africa for two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is, which is slated to start on November 15.

Rana was notably absent from the 15-man squad announced on Friday for the first Test in Mirpur. This diagnosis follows a history of fitness challenges for the bowler, including a grade-two side strain from the July tour of Zimbabwe that sidelined him for several key assignments, as well as a subsequent glute injury that disrupted his previous rehabilitation efforts.
