Jeff Bezos set to become co-owner of legendary sports team in $1.8B deal

A consortium spearheaded by Amit Bhatia, featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is nearing a deal to acquire a stake in Liverpool. The stake is reported to be “roughly one third.”

The Reds’ current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed that a group has approached them to buy a stake in the club, managed by Bhatia. A statement read: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

According to Sky News, the deal would bring Bezos into an investor group that also includes Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co‐founder. The consortium is led by Bhatia, the son‐in‐law of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and, until recently, a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers. It comes as the Buffalo Bills were forced to issue a statement after a humiliating design flaw in the new $2.1B stadium was exposed.

The report indicates that FSG, the club’s controlling shareholder since 2010, is gearing up to announce a transaction “as soon as this week.”

While an announcement is anticipated in the coming days, it’s also noted that the timeline could “slip into next week.”

If finalized, the deal would bring together a trio of the world’s wealthiest individuals as co‐owners of the Reds — one of English football’s most storied clubs.

Bezos’ fortune is estimated by Forbes at over $280 billion, with Saverin reportedly worth more than $32 billion. With that, the trio’s investment would reportedly value Liverpool at around $6 billion, implying a transaction of about $1.8 billion.
