How Dubai Shaped a Filipino-German Teen’s Sense of Identity

For 19-year-old Chiara Mae Gottschalk, the concept of home is a blend of her dual heritage and the multicultural landscape of Dubai. Born to Filipino and German parents, she moved to the UAE at only two months old. Gottschalk credits her Filipino roots with instilling values of warmth and family, while her German background has fostered a strong sense of discipline and individual responsibility. Integrating these influences within Dubai’s diverse society has allowed her to view cultural differences as bridges for connection rather than barriers. She describes this journey as learning that one does not need to choose a single part of their identity over another, noting that their differences are what ultimately help people understand one another more deeply. For some, it is the country they left behind, while for others, it is the city where they grew up, went to school, and built their lives, even if their family roots lie elsewhere. Dubai has brought these influences together with the many cultures she encountered in everyday life. While also questioning whether they belong entirely to any one of them, being connected to various cultures can sometimes leave a person feeling as though they belong to several places at once. “Navigating that has meant becoming more comfortable with the different parts of myself and allowing my experiences to shape me without feeling the need to define myself too narrowly. Her message to other young people is to remain open to new experiences and not feel pressured to define their futures prematurely.
She encourages her peers to view their time in such a diverse environment as an opportunity to practice kindness and understanding. She emphasizes that making an impact does not require waiting for adulthood or extraordinary achievements, but rather begins with small, consistent actions in the present.
