Mominul Haque Prepares to Expand Bowling Role in Tests

Bangladesh Test specialist Mominul Haque has been putting in extensive net sessions to sharpen his left-arm spin, aiming to offer his captain additional bowling depth during upcoming red-ball fixtures. While a large portion of the national squad is currently competing in the UAE for a tri-nation ODI tournament, Mominul and opening batsman Shadman Islam remained behind to practice under the supervision of BCB High Performance Unit head coach Mohammad Salahuddin.
During these sessions, Shadman concentrated strictly on his batting while Mominul bowled at length against him. A member of the team management revealed that Mominul, who currently holds 11 Test wickets, is actively developing his bowling to give the captain viable options when main bowlers require a breather. The team management noted that having Mominul roll his arm over could prove crucial in easing the burden on primary slow bowlers like Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. According to furthermore, it will also bring some variety as both of them are different types of bowler,”, The member of the team management.
Allowing Mominul to bowl short spells in the middle overs gives frontline spinners a chance to rest and return fresher for later spells, while also introducing a different variation to the attack. Management emphasized that relying solely on fast bowlers to relieve spinners can overwork the pacers. Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto specifically approached Mominul to ask if he would focus more on his bowling, an offer the experienced batter embraced wholeheartedly rather than approaching the task with a casual part-time mindset. Usually, we bring pacers to replace the spinners, but you also have to understand the workload of a pace bowler,” he said, adding that Test skipper Najmul Hossain also played a part in it. “He can also replace Miraz for that matter, if the offspinner bowls a number of overs at a stretch, or in a day. He now wants to make sure he just does not fulfill his duty by bowling with the mindset of a part-time bowler.
Mominul last bowled in a Test match in late 2023, recording career-best figures of 3 for 4 in 3.1 overs against New Zealand at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Determined to be fully prepared for a demanding Test schedule, he is gearing up for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies, which is set to commence on October 28 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
