Saudi Arabia Pilots 10-Day Remote Learning Initiative in Four

Saudi Arabia is preparing to implement a pilot scheme featuring up to 10 days of remote learning across four specific education regions during the 1448 AH academic year. This initiative seeks to embed online instruction into the standard educational framework rather than using it merely as an emergency measure. According to the Ministry of Education’s proposed pilot will cover Mecca, the Eastern Province, Tabuk and Najran during the 1448 AH academic year, according to an implementation guide, By Saudi newspaper Okaz. Regional education directors will have the authority to grant exceptions where justified by educational needs. Saudi Arabia starts school year with 4.5m students back.
Program Coverage and Objectives
- Participating Regions: Mecca, the Eastern Province, Tabuk, and Najran.
- Core Objectives: Assessing digital platform readiness, enhancing teacher delivery skills, and fostering student independence.
- Operational Format: Schools will substitute traditional classroom hours with live virtual lessons, maintaining regular timetables and ensuring all coursework is completed.
The 10-day trial is structured into three distinct tiers, with responsibility for scheduling shared between administrative authorities and school leadership.
Remote Learning Trial Structure
- Level 1: Two nationally synchronized school days applied across all four regions.
- Level 2: Three days designated by regional education directors for their respective jurisdictions.
- Level 3: Up to five days at the discretion of individual headteachers, reserved for schools with ‘advanced’ or ‘outstanding’ performance ratings.
Specific restrictions are in place to safeguard the academic calendar.
Trials cannot be scheduled during the first or final week of a term, nor on days reserved for periodic, final, or international exams. Furthermore, Thursdays and Sundays are excluded, as are the days immediately preceding public holidays or extended weekends.
Schools must finalize their remote schedules before each term begins and communicate these plans to families. Those schools must also meet minimum requirements for student learning outcomes.
Teachers and staff are required to undergo specialized training through the National Institute for Educational Professional Development. Following each trial period, institutions must provide assessment reports on their digital activities to ensure continued performance monitoring.
Separate Precautionary Measures in Riyadh
While the ministry-led pilot is specific to the four identified regions, Riyadh and Diriyah are currently operating under a separate, temporary remote learning arrangement.
These precautionary measures for all students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel have been extended through Thursday, October 22. Instruction is being conducted via the Madrasati platform and other authorized digital systems. The extension applies to male and female students and to educational and administrative employees.
