Casualties reported following major fire at Canadian military base

A large fire at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta has left several people dead or injured, according to the nation’s defence minister. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, authorities have described the incident as a deeply delicate and active situation. Ambulances lined up outside Wainwright Health Centre after the deadly blast at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

Reports from Global News suggest that at least seven individuals were killed and dozens more wounded when a gas line or well was struck during a live-fire training exercise, citing unnamed military sources.

Defence Minister David McGuinty stated that he cannot recall an incident of this magnitude in recent memory. Defence Minister David McGuinty did not specify how many had died in the fire.

The fire reportedly began on Saturday, with the Municipal District of Wainwright recording the first notification at approximately 17:30 local time (23:30 GMT). High winds caused the flames to spread rapidly, eventually breaching the perimeter fences of the installation.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, describing the event as a serious incident that has deeply affected military personnel. In response to the crisis, the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton initiated a code orange, a protocol reserved for managing high-casualty events.

Emergency doctor Warren Thirsk noted that the facility is managing an unprecedented influx of patients, labeling the situation a disaster that occurs perhaps once every 15 to 25 years. He emphasized that the volume of arrivals threatened to overwhelm regional healthcare capacity. It is more patients than any of us want to count right now.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged the tragic nature of the fire, noting its significant impact on military staff. Neighbouring provinces have mobilized in support, with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe offering resources and British Columbia Premier David Eby pledging all possible assistance.

Wainwright serves as a primary site for the Canadian military’s live-fire exercises. On a typical operational day, the base hosts approximately 690 military personnel alongside 300 civilian workers.

Local officials have issued a firm advisory for residents to avoid the vicinity of the base to ensure that emergency vehicles have priority access. The military and local agencies continue to manage the ongoing suppression efforts.
