Mahela Jayawardene Steps Down as Mumbai Indians Head Coach

Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have parted ways ahead of the IPL 2027 season, the franchise announced on Saturday, October 17. The departure concludes a ten-season association between the team and the former Sri Lanka captain, who guided the side to three of their five Indian Premier League trophies during his tenure.

Jayawardene initially took charge as head coach before IPL 2017 and held the position through the 2022 campaign, leading the franchise to championship titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. He subsequently transitioned into the role of Global Head of Performance as the franchise expanded its global footprint into foreign tournaments, including the SA20, ILT20, and Major League Cricket (MLC). During which Jayawardene helmed three of MI’s five title wins – in 2017, 2019 and 2020, the decision brings to an end a journey lasting ten seasons. Jayawardene was first appointed as head coach ahead of IPL 2017 and stayed in the capacity until the 2022 season.

Following a difficult 2024 campaign, Jayawardene took over the head coach role once again ahead of IPL 2025, taking over from Mark Boucher and steering the side to Qualifier 2. However, Mumbai Indians struggled in the 2026 tournament, finishing second from the bottom of the points table. Franchise owner Nita Ambani expressed gratitude for his service, stating, “Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us.” She extended thanks on behalf of the organisation, adding that they will always cherish their shared journey and achievements. However, as they finished second from bottom, the 2026 season proved to be a disappointing one.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Jayawardene described his stint as a “very special part of my journey” that he will “always treasure.” He noted that he leaves with great pride in what they accomplished together, wishing the team future success. Following his exit, Mumbai Indians must now appoint a new head coach prior to the mid-November retention deadline for IPL 2027.
