Delhi Closes Central Park for Two Days Ahead of

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has informed the Delhi Police that Central Park in Connaught Place will be closed on October 16 and 17 for administrative reasons. The council requested adequate security measures to prevent unauthorized entry into the park premises during this timeframe.

Security has been heightened in the area following calls for a demonstration on Oct. 16 at 5 pm, where participants were urged to gather at Central Park carrying the national flag (Tiranga). In response, Delhi Police urged the public not to violate prohibitory orders enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in and around Connaught Place. According to appealing to protesters and the public, the police, No one should participate in any gathering that violates the prohibitory order currently in force.

Political Mobilization and Legal Directives

In a video message on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Neha Yadav stated that the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appealed to workers, supporters, and citizens to join the rally in large numbers. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke organized the flag protest to support two CJP leaders detained and jailed for five days after demonstrating at a banned site earlier in the week.

Authorities reiterated that BNSS orders aim to protect public and private property, preserve peace, and safeguard public safety. Police explicitly warned against attending unauthorized gatherings, stating

  • Anyone found violating the active prohibitory orders will face appropriate legal action.
  • Public cooperation is requested to ensure peaceful order across the Connaught Place district.
  • Police may permit a select group to gather at an alternate designated site to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem, provided prescribed rules and decorum are strictly honored.

Traders Petition Supreme Court

Local traders petitioned the Supreme Court seeking an injunction against the demonstration, cautioning that unapproved gatherings “would cause severe loss” to local businesses. The merchants also demanded financial compensation for business disruptions suffered during a similar rally over the weekend that was foiled by a security crackdown. Delhi Police assured merchants that suitable protective measures will be implemented to safeguard local commercial operations.
