Delhi Capitals Hire Chaminda Vaas as Fast Bowling Coach

The Delhi Capitals have recruited former Sri Lankan all-rounder Chaminda Vaas as their fast bowling coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League. The 52-year-old, a legendary figure in international cricket with 355 Test and 400 ODI wickets, will now play a key role in the team’s newly restructured backroom staff led by head coach Sourav Ganguly.
Vaas enters the role as a replacement for Munaf Patel, who served as the franchise’s bowling coach for the past two seasons. His appointment coincides with the Capitals adding Yuvraj Singh to their ranks as an assistant and batting coach earlier this week. This marks Vaas’s first-ever coaching tenure within the IPL.
His extensive coaching resume includes three separate stints with the Sri Lankan national team. His international career in management began with a short contract for New Zealand, followed by a tenure with Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, he served as Ireland’s bowling coach during the 2016 T20 World Cup. Beyond coaching, Vaas possesses firsthand IPL experience, having represented the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010, where he claimed 18 wickets across 13 appearances. Vaas, 52, has previously coached Sri Lanka’s men’s team in the same capacity in three separate stints. His coaching debut came for New Zealand for a brief contract before he was appointed for the Sri Lankan side from 2013-15. For Deccan Chargers between 2008-10 where he picked 18 wickets in 13 games for the franchise, vaas has also played in the IPL.
