Mushfiqur Rahim Ruled Out of First Test Against West Indies

Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has been sidelined for the first Test match against the West Indies. The injury occurred during a training session at the BCB Academy on Tuesday when he was struck on his right index finger by a bouncer. Despite attempts to prepare for the series opener at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, he was unable to wear his gloves comfortably on Wednesday morning due to persistent pain. After an X-ray was taken of his finger, no tear was found, fortunately for him. But there had not been sufficient improvement by this morning, he remained under observation.
Team physiotherapist Bayjedul Islam Khan clarified that while X-rays ruled out any bone fracture, the injury is classified as a contusion. He confirmed that while the veteran player is missing the current match, he is expected to recover in time for the second Test in Sylhet, which begins on November 5. Khan expressed optimism regarding his recovery timeline, noting that he should be ready for action within three days.
Mushfiqur’s absence has prompted a tactical change, with Towhid Hridoy being drafted into the playing XI for the opening encounter.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first as the team continues its campaign in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Having recently scored 81 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, Mushfiqur remains a key asset for the side as they chase the four wins and one draw required to reach the tournament final.
