Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is currently in critical condition, according to a report by the opposition media outlet IranWire on the 7th (local time). Mojtaba succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, as the third Supreme Leader in March but has not appeared in public since, fueling rumors of severe injury or unconsciousness.
Citing multiple anonymous sources familiar with the Masoud Pezeshkian administration, the outlet reported, “Mojtaba is in a critically ill state and has had no contact with cabinet members.” It added that rumors have spread within the Iranian regime’s leadership that his death would not come as a surprise. One source stated, “It would not be shocking if news of his martyrdom arrives soon.”
President Pezeshkian had said in a state TV interview on July 5, “Communication with the Supreme Leader is currently very difficult,” adding, “His existence gives us reassurance.”
Mojtaba was reportedly injured during a U.S.-Iran airstrike on the Supreme Leader’s residence in Tehran on February 28. However, he has since only issued written ‘statement’s and refrained from releasing photos or videos, drawing criticism as the “Cardboard Ayatollah.”
Speculations have circulated, including claims that the U.S. Department of Defense assessed his appearance was too disfigured for public appearances or that he sought treatment at a hospital within the presidential residence in Moscow, Russia. In April, reports emerged that he was receiving treatment while unconscious.
During Ali Khamenei’s funeral last month, unverified claims suggested Mojtaba wished to attend but was restrained by the Revolutionary Guard.
