Elon Musk Confirms SpaceX Restricted Ukraine’s Starlink Access

Elon Musk has confirmed that his company, SpaceX, implemented restrictions on Ukraine’s Starlink internet service. This disclosure follows reports from Ukrainian officials that connectivity problems, which had impacted military operations for over a week, appeared to have been resolved. Depending on what communications are needed, both of which run on networks of low Earth orbit satellites launched by SpaceX, ukraine uses both the civilian service Starlink and the more secure Starshield. Particularly in remote areas on the battlefield, while Starshield allows Ukrainian drone operators to see targets in real time, as well as operate interceptor drones, starlink allows military units to co-ordinate. When Ukraine’s extensive use of Starlink had been known for several years, musk did not disclose in his post why SpaceX had chosen to make the change to its service last week.

Musk stated that the decision to limit the network was based on Ukraine’s violation of service terms, specifically alleging that the military used the civilian commercial platform to conduct offensive drone strikes to kill people. He emphasized that such offensive use was never authorized. Regarding the military-grade Starshield system, he clarified that it remains a separate entity controlled by the United States government, leaving operational decisions regarding that platform to US authorities.

The tech billionaire, who previously denied intentionally throttling the connection, noted that the loophole permitting such activity was closed last week. He asserted that SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any other private company globally, adding that while Starlink can support military infrastructure, it cannot be utilized for unequivocal offensive strikes that might invite retaliation.

The developments occurred amid a diplomatic standoff involving US President Donald Trump, who has frequently denied instructing Musk to limit the service. Trump recently stated he had told the Tesla and X owner to restore full functionality. This friction reportedly intensified due to disagreements over Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, which Washington fears could drive up global fuel prices. Trump has denied reports that the US threatened to withdraw intelligence support if these strikes continued.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov characterized Musk’s claims as “very strange.” He argued on Telegram that Starlink terminals in Ukraine are already configured with speed caps of 70-90 km/h and are disabled within Russian territory, making it physically impossible to employ the commercial service for deep or medium-range strikes. There has been no formal comment from the Ukrainian defence ministry. Reacting to Musk’s post, Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram that Starlink terminals operating in Ukraine have a speed restriction of 70-90km/h and do not work on Russian territory.

Despite the disagreement, Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara reported on Saturday that the military is now experiencing a stable connection. Drone capabilities have reportedly improved, with operators now reaching speeds exceeding 400 km/h, surpassing the previous 161 km/h threshold where the signal typically cut out. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed via Telegram that speeds have returned to necessary levels.

The underlying tension has been exacerbated by domestic US concerns regarding energy costs.

In response to public pressure over rising fuel prices, Trump recently waived certain sanctions against Russia and reached an agreement to facilitate the supply of Russian diesel to global markets—a move criticized by European allies for potentially funding Russia’s war effort.

Zelensky had initially agreed to halt strikes on energy infrastructure under this arrangement but resumed them after citing instances of Moscow disregarding the deal.
