Sheikh Khaled and Mark Carney Strengthen UAE-Canada Strategic Ties

Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, held official high-level discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa. The meeting, which took place at Parliament Hill, focused on deepening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for collaboration across sectors of mutual strategic interest. Upon his arrival, the Crown Prince signed the Distinguished Visitors Book, expressing his optimism that the visit would foster a stronger foundation for cooperation to benefit the citizens of both nations. Reflecting the ambitions of both sides and maximising their respective strengths and expertise, the meeting explored opportunities to advance bilateral cooperation and expand economic and investment partnerships. Encourage mutual investment and expand collaboration between relevant entities on initiatives and projects with tangible economic and development impact, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen links between their business communities.

Prime Minister Carney formally welcomed the Crown Prince and his delegation, underscoring Canada’s firm commitment to expanding partnerships that align with the developmental and economic priorities of both the UAE and Canada. Sheikh Khaled conveyed the well-wishes of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while the Canadian Prime Minister reciprocated with warm regards for the UAE’s leadership and prosperity.

The two leaders held extensive talks regarding investment, trade, and regional stability. They highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagement in addressing global challenges and promoting peace. The discussions extended to several key sectors, including artificial intelligence, advanced technology, clean energy, defence, mining, logistics, aviation, space, and food security. Sheikh Khaled stressed the UAE’s desire to establish long-term strategic frameworks that enhance economic competitiveness and encourage closer ties between Emirati and Canadian corporate institutions.

A significant highlight of the visit was the formal signing of three separate agreements and memorandums of understanding, alongside the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. These pacts are designed to bolster cooperation in priority areas such as renewable energy, defence, and diplomatic training, supporting the long-term strategic ambitions of both countries.

Beyond the formal agreements, it was announced that Emirati firms are actively engaged in negotiations with Canadian counterparts for deals valued at up to C$21.1 billion, or roughly US$15 billion. These talks fall under a broader C$70 billion (US$50 billion) investment framework, which was originally established during Prime Minister Carney’s visit to the UAE in November 2025. These ongoing negotiations specifically target four strategic domains: energy, mining, logistics, and sovereign wealth fund investments.

The meeting included a high-profile delegation from the UAE, featuring Sheikh Khalifa Bin Tahnoon Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court, and several ministers, including Reem Al Hashimy, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, and Mohamed Bin Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei.

Also present were Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, the UAE Foreign Minister’s Envoy to Canada; Ghanem Sultan Alsuwaidi, Advisor of Security Affairs; Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council; Maryam Eid AlMheiri, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Media Office; and UAE Ambassador to Canada, Abdulrahman Ali Almur Al Neyadi.
