Patel defends celebration with Olympic hockey team: “The players, who are my friends, invited me to the locker room”

Sen. Peter Welch questioned Patel about his presence at the Winter Olympics in Italy, asking him why he was alongside the U.S. hockey team as they celebrated their victory.

“What you’ll never understand is the players, who are my friends, invited me to the locker room,” Patel said. “What you’ll never understand, is that during that trip, where 300,000 Americans went to Italy to participate in the games and watch them, not a single security incident occurred.”

Patel added, “the most important thing to come out of that trip, besides the American men defeating the Canadians and celebrating the love of this country, and inviting me in to do so, is the fact that we obtained the seizure and capture of China’s most prolific hacker and returned him to the United States.”

Patel defends his decision to sue magazine, reporter after it printed a story alleging he has a drinking problem

Patel defended his decision to file a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic after it printed a story alleging he has a drinking problem that has interfered with his ability to do his job.

“As a U.S. citizen, I have every right to claim the truth. She printed false material. I’m taking her to court. As a personal private, let me finish. As a personal private citizen, I am allowed to participate in my own defense, especially when there’s a smear campaign,” Patel said.

When Sen. Peter Welch asked him if the FBI has opened an investigation into Sarah Fitzpatrick, the journalist who penned the article, Patel denied doing so. MS Now reported in May, citing sources, that the FBI had opened an investigation into Fitzpatrick.

“The FBI investigates criminals, and the FBI does not investigate personal matters,” Patel said.

“Did the FBI investigate the author of this article?” Welch asked.

“No,” Patel said.
