Historic Firsts Shape the 2026 Midterm Election Results

Winners up and down the 2026 ballot made history, with projection desks pointing to breakthrough representation for state and federal offices alike. As President Donald Trump navigated the second half of his term, both major political parties welcomed a diverse cohort of newly elected leaders.
Keisha Lance Bottoms is set to become Georgia’s first Black and first female governor. Bottoms, an Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 and a former Biden administration official, defeated Trump-endorsed Rick Jackson by centering her campaign on Medicaid expansion, property tax relief, and increased education spending. Bottoms, who served as Atlanta mayor between 2018 and 2022, was among the women whom President Joe Biden considered as a running mate in the 2020 election. Including abortion, during the campaign, the two candidates clashed over culture issues.
In New Hampshire, Chris Pappas won election to the US Senate, becoming the nation’s first openly gay male senator. His victory preserves a vital seat for Democrats in a battleground Republicans heavily targeted. Meanwhile, Byron Donalds secured a win to become Florida’s first Black governor, championing tax reforms and data center regulations backed by a full Trump endorsement. His win joins Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Bottoms as the three serving Black governors nationwide. Regulating data centers and supporting Trump’s agenda in a state that has become more solidly red, he campaigned on tax reforms. Campaigning on affordability, Acton pitched property tax cuts targeted at middle-income and older Ohioans, and a moratorium on data centers unless they cover their own utility costs.
South Carolina saw Annie Andrews flip a seat held by Republicans for nearly three decades, becoming the state’s first elected female US senator. Andrews defeated Darline Graham, who had been appointed by Trump following the death of her brother, former Senator Lindsey Graham. Gina Hinojosa broke a 36-year drought for Democrats in Texas, unseating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to become the state’s first Hispanic governor and only the third woman to hold the office. Former Sen, trump orchestrated Graham’s appointment to the seat left vacant after the sudden death of her late brother. In her short political career, Graham pitched herself as more conservative than her brother, breaking with some of his positions, like eliminating the filibuster or a more hardline approach to immigration, to side with Trump. Quality of life and corruption, andrews painted herself as an independent-minded moderate who is concerned about affordability. Greg Abbott who served almost 12 years in office. Hinojosa, a 52-year-old state lawmaker and attorney, will be the first Democrat elected governor since Ann Richards in 1990 and only the third woman to hold the position. Haley Stevens — who left the post to run for the US Senate before losing in the primary.
Congressional races brought additional milestones.
Melat Kiros won Colorado’s 1st District to become the state’s first Black female member of Congress, joining the legislative body as a young democratic socialist. Adam Hamawy claimed victory in New Jersey’s 12th District as the state’s first Muslim member of Congress, while Claire Valdez became New York’s first female Native American representative in the 7th District. In Michigan, Jeremy Moss secured the 11th District seat to become the Wolverine State’s first openly gay member of Congress. Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist and lawyer, will also join the Generation – Z sect of Congress as one of the youngest sitting members of the House. Hamawy, a retired US Army combat surgeon and sharp Israel critic, hails from the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, supporting Medicare for All as well as canceling medical and student loan debt. Valdez’s win marks another victory for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing whose growing influence came in part from the popularity of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who championed Valdez.
Ohio politics shifted as physician Amy Acton won the gubernatorial race, marking the first Democratic gubernatorial victory in the state since 2006 and the first time a woman was elected to the office, defeating Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. In California, former federal official Xavier Becerra maintained Democratic control by winning the governorship to succeed Gavin Newsom, successfully tying his opponent Steve Hilton to the Trump administration. She later joined his administration. Becerra, the former US congressman, state attorney general and secretary of Health and Human Services under the Biden administration, emerged from a crowded, contentious primary to succeed Gov.
